How deep should mulch be? The extension depths, material by material
Quick answer
Two to 3 inches on most beds. UF/IFAS gives that for plant beds, and Mississippi State gives it for bark, compost and shredded leaves. Loose material goes deeper: Mississippi State lists 6 inches of whole leaves and 6 to 8 of pine needles or wheat straw. Around trees, Iowa State allows 3 to 4 inches of wood chips on well-drained ground and 2 to 3 on heavy soil. Keep it off the trunk.

The short rule
Thin for fine mulch, deep for fluffy mulch
The depth depends on what you spread. Mississippi State's mulch bulletin gives a depth for each material. Fine, dense mulch goes on thin: 1 to 2 inches of grass clippings, 2 to 3 of bark, compost or shredded leaves. Loose, airy mulch goes on deep because it settles: 6 inches of whole leaves, 6 to 8 of pine needles or wheat straw.

Trees and shrubs
A flat ring with a gap at the trunk
Every page we checked says to keep mulch off the trunk, but they give different gaps. Mississippi State says to pull it back about 2 to 3 inches. Maryland says 3 inches. Iowa State wants at least 6 inches from tree trunks, and warns that a layer that's too deep can waterlog the soil and get in the way of oxygen reaching the roots.

Topping up
Measure what's left before you buy
A bed that already has mulch only needs a top-up. The bag's coverage line assumes bare ground, so measure the old layer first and buy only the difference.
Push a ruler down to the soil
Push a ruler through the mulch in three or four spots and read the depth. Use the average.
Subtract it from the target
Pick a target from the table. If 1 inch is left and you want 3, you are buying 2 inches.
Measure the bed
Length times width in feet. A 10 x 20 ft border is 200 square feet.
Work out the volume
Square feet times inches to add, divided by 12. 200 x 2 / 12 = 33.3 cubic feet, which is 17 bags of 2 cu ft.

Print it, tick it off
Mulch depth checklist
Take this out with a ruler before you order.
- Material picked and its depth looked up
- Old mulch measured in three or four spots
- Inches to add written down
- Bed length and width in feet
- Cubic feet and bag count from the calculator
- Gap left at every trunk and stem
- Total depth checked after spreading

Tips and tricks
- Mark the stick. Wrap tape on a garden stake at your target depth and poke it in while you rake. It is quicker than guessing.
- Rake the ring flat. Spread tree rings as a flat, even layer, then pull it back from the trunk with your hand.
- Go thin on heavy clay. Iowa State drops to 2 to 3 inches on heavy soils. If water sits after rain, use the low end. (Iowa State Extension FAQ, mulch depth around trees and shrubs)
- Write the depth down. Note the depth and the date on your mulch record. Next year's top-up starts from that number.
Common questions
Questions
How deep should mulch be in a flower bed?
Two to 3 inches. That's UF/IFAS's figure for plant beds and Mississippi State's for bark, compost and shredded leaves.

Can mulch be too deep?
Yes. Maryland says organic mulch should not go past 3 inches, and Iowa State says too deep a layer can waterlog the soil and get in the way of oxygen.

How far should mulch be from a tree trunk?
The pages differ: about 2 to 3 inches (Mississippi State), 3 inches (Maryland) or at least 6 inches (Iowa State). Using 6 covers all three.

Why can straw and whole leaves go on deeper?
They're loose and settle a lot. Mississippi State lists 6 inches of whole leaves and 6 to 8 of wheat straw or pine needles, against 2 to 3 for shredded leaves.

How much mulch to add 1 inch to 100 square feet?
100 x 1 / 12 = 8.33 cubic feet, which is 5 bags of 2 cu ft or 6 bags of 1.5 cu ft.
