Planting tulips in zones 8 to 10: one plan from the fridge to the bed
Quick answer
In zones 8 to 10, tulips get their cold in the fridge first. LSU AgCenter chills them for at least 6 to 8 weeks and plants in late December or early January, because soil that is still warm can cancel the chilling. Plant them about 5 inches deep and 3 or 4 inches apart. At 4 inches, a 4 x 8 ft bed holds 288 bulbs. They bloom in March and early April. Plan on buying and chilling new bulbs each fall.

Decide first
Should you plant tulips this winter?
Do it yourself
Chill them and plant them yourself
You need fridge space with no fruit in it for 6 to 8 weeks or longer, and one cool afternoon to plant. Buy in October or November so you have time for the chilling.

Skip the late sale bulbs
LSU says unchilled bulbs bought on sale in late December and January have little chance of blooming properly. If you missed the chilling start, wait until next fall.

October to buy, 6 to 8 weeks or more in the fridge, late December to early January to plant
The steps, in order
Look up your first fall frost
Type your zip code into the frost date lookup and write down the typical first fall frost. For zip code 70808 in Baton Rouge, the LSU Ben-Hur Farm station gives November 26. LSU plants about a month after that date, so in this band use it as a check.

Pick the planting week, then count back
LSU plants in late December or early January. We mark that as December 21 to January 10. Count 8 weeks back from your planting day for the fridge-in date: October 26 for December 21, November 15 for January 10. LSU says the bulbs should be in the fridge by mid to late November at the latest.
Have ready: A calendar and a planting day.
Source: LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016), checked October 10, 2026.
Measure the bed and count the bulbs
Measure inside the boards and type the size into the bulb calculator with 4 inches spacing. LSU spaces tulips 3 or 4 inches apart. A 4 x 8 ft bed at 4 inches takes 12 rows of 24, which is 288 bulbs. A smaller patch needs fewer bulbs and less fridge room.
Have ready: A tape measure.

Buy in October or November
Texas Extension in San Antonio calls October through November an excellent time to buy bulbs. Buy early enough that your count of weeks fits before planting day, and add a few spares.
Have ready: The bulb count from step 3.

Chill them: open bags, low shelf, no fruit
Texas Extension keeps bulbs in the lower part of the fridge and never in air-tight bags. Placer County uses the crisper drawer and keeps apples and other fruit out, because the gas from ripening fruit kills the flower inside the bulb. Write the fridge-in date on the bag.
Have ready: Paper or mesh bags and a marker.
Source: Texas Extension, Bexar County, Timely Tips (October 1 and November 19, 2005), checked October 10, 2026; UC Master Gardeners of Placer County, Growing Tulips in South Placer County (2025), checked October 10, 2026.
Plant straight from the fridge, about 5 inches deep
On a cool day in your window, take the bulbs out and plant them the same day. Set them pointed end up. LSU plants tulips about 5 inches deep and 3 or 4 inches apart, and groups each color in a mass rather than a single row.
Have ready: A trowel marked at 5 inches and the chilled bulbs.
Source: LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016), checked October 10, 2026; UC Master Gardeners of Placer County, Growing Tulips in South Placer County (2025), checked October 10, 2026.
Label it, then log the bloom
Mark each group and fill in the planting map or the log below with the fridge-in and planting dates. LSU says bulbs planted at this time generally bloom in March and early April. Write down the first bloom date, so next fall you know whether to shift the week.
Have ready: Plant labels and the printed map.

What goes wrong
⚠️
Planting too early in warm soil
LSU says chilled bulbs planted into soil that is still too warm can lose the chilling, and early plantings can bloom as soon as February, when freezes and storms are more likely to ruin the flowers.
Source: LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016), checked October 10, 2026.
⚠️
Too few weeks in the fridge
NC Extension says bulbs that don't get a long enough chilling period usually have shorter stems and bloom close to the ground. Count the weeks from the date on the bag.
Source: NC Extension (Wayne County), Plant Bulbs This Fall for Spring Flowers (2025), checked October 9, 2026.
⚠️
Fruit in the same fridge
UC Master Gardeners in Placer County say the gas from ripening fruit will kill the flower inside the bulb. Keep apples and other fruit out of the crisper until planting day.
Source: UC Master Gardeners of Placer County, Growing Tulips in South Placer County (2025), checked October 10, 2026.
⚠️
Sealed plastic bags
Texas Extension says not to leave bulbs in air-tight bags in the fridge. Use paper or the open mesh bag they came in.
Source: Texas Extension, Bexar County, Timely Tips (October 1 and November 19, 2005), checked October 10, 2026.
⚠️
Counting on a second spring
UF/IFAS says tulips in Florida bloom once and typically won't bloom again, and NC Extension says eastern North Carolina is too warm for them to come back year after year. Budget for new bulbs each fall.

Florida and zone 10
UF/IFAS gives no calendar date, only that bulbs pre-chilled for two to four months go into the yard in the winter. None of the pages we found gives a week for zone 10. Follow LSU's late December to early January and its cool-soil rule.

What people learn the second year
Tips and tricks
- Set two phone reminders. One for the fridge-in date and one for planting day. Bulbs in a back drawer are easy to forget.
- Mark 5 inches on the trowel. Wrap tape around the blade at 5 inches, LSU's depth, so every hole comes out the same. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
- One bag per color. LSU says tulips look best in masses with each color in its own group. Keep one labeled bag per variety in the fridge so the colors land where you planned. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
- Pots work too. LSU grows chilled tulips in pots outside in a cool, shady spot and moves them into the sun once the shoots are about an inch tall. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
- Watch the forecast in your window. Plant during a cool spell rather than a warm one. Warm soil right after planting is what LSU warns about. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
