When to plant tulip bulbs in zones 8 to 10

Quick answer

In zones 8 to 10, tulips go in late, and only after their time in the fridge. UC Master Gardeners in south Placer County, California, plant between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Texas Extension in San Antonio plants anytime in December after 60 or more days of chilling. LSU AgCenter plants in late December or early January, because warm soil can undo the chilling. NC Extension in Goldsboro, zone 8a, plants in November once the soil is below 60°F. Two of these windows open after the area's typical first frost and two open before it, so the frost date alone doesn't set the week.

The windows

Four warm-zone windows, side by side

Farther north, tulips go in by late October. In the warm band the window slides toward winter. The reason is soil temperature: LSU says planting chilled bulbs into soil that is still too warm can cancel the chilling and lead to poor blooms. NC Extension waits for the soil to drop below 60°F.

Your yard

Pick your planting week

The frost date alone doesn't set the week. Roseville's typical first frost is December 5, the latest in the table, yet Placer County starts planting at Halloween. Baton Rouge's is November 26, and LSU waits about a month past it. Use the frost date as a check, then follow the source nearest you.

  1. Look up your first fall frost

Type your zip code into the frost date lookup and note the typical first fall frost. On the frost-free coast the lookup may show no date at all.

  2. Find the nearest source

California inland valleys: Halloween to Thanksgiving. San Antonio: December. Gulf Coast Louisiana: late December to early January. Eastern North Carolina: November.

Source: UC Master Gardeners of Placer County, Growing Tulips in South Placer County (2025), checked October 10, 2026; Texas Extension, Bexar County, Timely Tips (October 1 and November 19, 2005), checked October 10, 2026; LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016), checked October 10, 2026; NC Extension (Wayne County), Plant Bulbs This Fall for Spring Flowers (2025), checked October 9, 2026.

  3. Check the fridge count

Make sure the bulbs have had their weeks. Texas Extension asks for 60 or more days before December planting, and LSU at least 6 to 8 weeks.

Source: Texas Extension, Bexar County, Timely Tips (October 1 and November 19, 2005), checked October 10, 2026; LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016), checked October 10, 2026.

  4. Plant on a cool day

LSU plants about 5 inches deep and 3 to 4 inches apart in Louisiana. Placer County goes 6 inches deep, in full sun at bloom time.

Source: LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016), checked October 10, 2026; UC Master Gardeners of Placer County, Growing Tulips in South Placer County (2025), checked October 10, 2026.

  5. Write the date down

Put the planting date and the fridge-in date on the bulb map. The bloom date next spring tells you if the timing worked.

Zone 10 and the frost-free coast

UF/IFAS gives Florida no calendar date, only that pre-chilled bulbs go into the yard in the winter. None of the pages we found gives a week for zone 10. There the nearest guide is Louisiana's late December to early January, with the same rule about cool soil.

Tips and tricks

  • Plant in a cool spell. Pick a stretch of cool days inside your window. Warm soil right after planting is what LSU warns about. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
  • Plant in groups of one color. LSU says tulips look better in masses than in single rows, with each color in its own group. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
  • Pots work too. LSU grows chilled tulips in pots outside in a cool, shady spot, then moves them into the sun once the shoots are about an inch tall. (LSU AgCenter, It's time to plant tulips, hyacinths (2016))
  • Mark the spot. Put a stake at each group, so nobody digs there before the shoots show.
