Pre-chilling tulip bulbs for a warm winter

Quick answer

In zones 8 to 10 the winter is too short and too mild to chill tulips, so the fridge does it. LSU AgCenter says at least 6 to 8 weeks, and UC Master Gardeners in Placer County say 6 to 10 weeks in the crisper just before planting. Texas Extension in San Antonio plants after 60 or more days, and UF/IFAS in Florida uses bulbs chilled for two to four months. Keep fruit out of that fridge and plan on the tulips flowering for one spring.

The reason

Why warm-zone tulips need the fridge

Tulips set their flowers after a long cold spell. Farther north the winter supplies it in the ground. In Placer County, California, the Master Gardeners say they cannot count on 6 to 10 weeks in a row at 40ยฐF or below. LSU AgCenter says Louisiana winters are not cold enough for long enough. UF/IFAS says Florida winters are just too warm.

Skip the cold and the flowers suffer. NC Extension says bulbs without a long enough chilling period usually have shorter stems and bloom close to the ground.

How long

Weeks in the fridge, source by source

The four warm-zone pages don't agree on one number, but they overlap. Six weeks is the shortest anyone uses, and the 60 days from Texas comes to about 8.6 weeks. Only UF/IFAS goes longer, with two to four months.

Your dates

Count back from planting day

Pick the planting day first, then count back. LSU plants in late December or early January, so it wants the bulbs in the fridge by mid to late November. Counted back from January 1, 2027, 6 weeks is November 20 and 8 weeks is November 6. Placer County plants by Thanksgiving, which is November 26 in 2026, so 10 weeks back is September 17.

  1. Buy early in the fall

Texas Extension in San Antonio calls October through November an excellent time to buy bulbs. Buy early enough to fit your weeks before planting day.

  2. Bag them so they breathe

Texas Extension says not to leave the bulbs in air-tight bags in the fridge. A paper bag or the open mesh bag they came in works.

Source: Texas Extension, Bexar County, Timely Tips (October 1 and November 19, 2005), checked October 10, 2026.

  3. Low shelf or crisper

Texas Extension says the lower part of the fridge is best, and Placer County uses the crisper drawer.

  4. Write the fridge-in date on the bag

Mark the bag with the day it went in and the day the count runs out. Then nobody has to guess in December.

  5. Plant straight from the fridge

Placer County chills them just before planting. Take the bulbs out on planting day and get them into the ground the same day.

What to expect

One good spring, then start over

UF/IFAS says Florida gardeners should treat tulips as annuals: they bloom once, may hang on for a season, and typically won't bloom again. NC Extension says the same about the warm eastern part of North Carolina. Budget for new bulbs and a new round of chilling each fall.

Tips and tricks

  • Chill a few spares. Put a few extra bulbs in the fridge. If one goes soft, you still fill the row.
  • Set a phone reminder. Add one alarm for the fridge-in date and one for planting day. Bulbs in a back drawer are easy to forget.
  • Keep the kinds apart. Use one labeled bag per variety, so the colors go where you planned them.
  • Ask before you share a fridge. A household fridge fills up with fruit in the fall. Tell everyone the crisper is off limits until planting day.

Do tulip bulbs need pre-chilling in zone 9?

The extension pages for Louisiana, Florida, south Placer County and San Antonio all chill tulips in the fridge before planting, because their winters don't give enough steady cold.

Should the bulbs be in a plastic bag?

Texas Extension says not to leave them in air-tight bags in the fridge, and to use the lower part of the fridge.
